BL History.jpeg

As a unique recreation area in Northwest Missouri, Big Lake has been shaped as much by the people who live, work and play here as by nature itself.

Big Lake owes its existence first to glaciers that carved out the Missouri River Valley some 15,000 years ago, and then to the river’s meanderings across the valley floor.

The lake is an oxbow––a curved stretch of water left behind when a river takes a shortcut across one of its loops. Big Lake is a former loop of the Missouri River and, at some 650 acres in size, is Missouri’s largest natural body of water.

Big Lake State Park is the perfect destination for a vacation or family gathering in northwest Missouri. The 407-acre state park offers everything visitors need to create a memorable vacation with a campgroundcamper cabinsday-use area and access to Big Lake.

The park is located adjacent to Big Lake, the largest remaining oxbow lake in Missouri. The park’s location provides easy access to the lake, which is popular for boating and fishing. The shallow lake also supports wetlands that create an ideal refuge for wetland bird species and migratory waterfowl.
